Historic walking tour of

13 - Alexander Circle

Few sites in Greater Cincinnati offer a view as magnificent as the Alexander Circle property in Fort Thomas. Overlooking the bend in the Ohio River east of Cincinnati, this 11.75 acre site was chosen in the 1880’s as home to United States Army Officers of the original Fort Thomas and served well as part of the Army Post. Officers were expected to entertain military personnel from near and far and needed large, elaborate homes for their very special guests. These Fort Thomas homes were built with those formal gatherings in mind.

The beautiful, stately brick structures represent the style of the Queen Anne historical period. Originally built as five single homes and five duplex homes, each has unique features including hardwood floors, high ceilings, large reception halls, elaborately carved stairways, character-defining woodwork and moldings, original wood windows, wrap-around porches, art-glass windows, turrets, and fireplaces.

The site overlooks the confluence of the Ohio and Little Miami Rivers, Riverbend Music Center, Coney Island and River Downs Race Track as well as the Ohio hillside. Although Interstate 275 and the Combs-Hehl Bridge are nearby, they are not seen or heard from this tract. Today the parcel sits within a 61-acre Tower Park as a National Historic District—where once 80,000 soldiers were inducted into service, now citizens walk and play, visit the Fort Thomas Military and Community Museum, listen to music or watch Shakespeare in the Amphitheater, enjoy events at the Community Center, or run on the track. Across the street from Tower Park is the Historic Midway District where restaurants and bars as well as retail offer convenience, charm, and local flavor.

These homes are in one of the best school districts in the nation. Highlands High School is known not only academically, but also for its superb football and drama departments. Woodfill Elementary is the brand new, state of the art school for the young family members. Northern Kentucky University is also only seven minutes away. Five-ten minutes from either Interstates 471, 275, or downtown Cincinnati, convenience couldn’t be better!

Bid packages will be available soon for the development of the Alexander Circle homes in Fort Thomas, Kentucky. The ten units will be sold as one development. For more information, please contact Frank Twehues, Assistant City Administrator (859)441-1055.
